Madrid May 1 , 2026 (GGPI): Spain’s Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, has firmly rejected recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a potential withdrawal of American troops from Spain, emphasizing Spain’s strong contributions to NATO and its commitment to international peace.
Speaking to reporters ahead of a media engagement on Friday, Minister Robles stated, “We do not accept lessons, and we are absolutely calm because we are one of the countries that contributes the most to NATO.” She further noted that Spain remains a reliable and active ally within the alliance.
President Trump indicated on Thursday that he would “probably” consider removing U.S. military forces from Spain and Italy, citing their opposition to recent U.S. military actions against Iran. He criticized Spain’s stance, calling it “absolutely horrible.”
Spain has maintained a clear position on the Iran conflict, arguing that military actions lack sufficient international legal justification. Consequently, the Spanish government has declined to permit the use of its military bases or airspace for offensive operations.

Despite these tensions, Spain continues to host critical U.S. military installations, including the Rota Naval Base and Morón Air Base, both of which play a key role in NATO operations across the Mediterranean and Africa.
Minister Robles responded to the remarks by stressing the importance of diplomatic respect, stating, “With respect, these messages have gone too far,” while reaffirming Spain’s dedication to NATO commitments and global stability.
In Italy, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto also questioned the rationale behind any proposed U.S. troop reductions in his country.
Additionally, earlier this week, the United States signaled the possibility of trade measures against Spain over its Iran policy, though bilateral trade relations remain unaffected at present.
Spain continues to advocate for multilateral cooperation and adherence to international law in addressing global security challenges.
