ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire and SIRTE, Libya (GGPI): U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), in partnership with several African and international nations has officially kicked off Exercise Flintlock 2026 on April 14, 2026, marked by dual opening ceremonies. This year’s premier annual special operations exercise is especially notable as Libya makes history by co-hosting the event for the first time alongside Côte d’Ivoire.
Flintlock 2026 brings together around 1,500 military personnel from more than 30 countries for a rigorous two-week training program. The exercise emphasizes coordinated air, land, and maritime operations aimed at strengthening partner forces’ ability to combat violent extremist groups. Major training activities are taking place in Sirte, Libya supported by the Italian Special Operations Command and at the International Counter-Terrorism Training Academy in Jacqueville, Côte d’Ivoire.

This year’s curriculum focuses on strengthening counter-terrorism tactics and border security, while also enhancing command and control through Multinational Joint Operations Centers. It emphasizes improving interoperability among African, European, and U.S. forces, and underscores the importance of protecting civilians and upholding the rule of law during military operations.
Strategic Impact:
The inclusion of Libya as a host nation signifies a major step toward the unification of Libyan military institutions. By training under a unified command structure, participating forces are building the “sovereign capacity” necessary to manage regional threats independently.
“Security is the foundation of prosperity,” said U.S. Army Lt. Gen. John Brennan, AFRICOM Deputy Commander. “Flintlock 2026 highlights our collective resolve to counter terrorism and build a stable environment where trade and civil society can flourish throughout North and West Africa.”The exercise is scheduled to conclude on May 1, 2026, following a series of comprehensive tactical demonstration
