Nicosia April 24, 2026 (GGPI) : France and Germany have confirmed their continued commitment to developing the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), despite recent disagreements between key industry partners.

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on Friday that they have instructed their defence ministries to keep working on the project. The decision follows discussions held during a European Union leaders’ summit in Cyprus.

Speaking to reporters, President Macron dismissed concerns that the project might be cancelled. He stated that he had a “productive conversation” with Chancellor Merz and emphasized that both countries remain focused on strengthening defence cooperation.

The FCAS program, which also includes Spain, aims to develop a next-generation air combat system. This includes advanced fighter jets, drones, and a digital “combat cloud” that allows real-time data sharing between military systems.

However, the project has faced challenges due to disagreements between French company Dassault Aviation and Airbus, which represents Germany and Spain. The dispute mainly concerns control over key parts of the aircraft development.

A spokesperson for the German government confirmed that both leaders have asked their defence ministers to continue discussions and outline the next steps in the upcoming weeks.

Earlier this week, defence ministers from both countries gave different timelines for when a final decision on the project might be made, showing that some differences still remain.

Despite speculation that the fighter jet part of the project could be dropped, both countries have now signaled their intention to move forward, even as negotiations continue.
